Material Workshop

We had material workshop where we explore the possibilities of material itself with different working process. With a list of process to be follow as below:

Drilling                       Cutting                    Molding

Weaving                     Binding                   Texturizing

Casting                       Printing                  Bonding

Welding                      Gliding                    Coating

Fastening                    Forming                  Knotting

Polishing                     Etching                   Melting

To have better understanding with the process, I pair them up with possible industry scale, images and video to have better idea what these process means, as some of them have similar process but yet very different and most of all the final product itself normally involve 2 or more process to created.

E.g. : Molding need melting the product itself then pour into a molding

Drilling – Construction industry

Cutting – Stone & Marble Industry

Molding – Injection molding / Plastic Industry

Weaving- Fabric Industry "Provides the means to interlace warp and filling yarns according a weave pattern to form a fabric structure. The yarns system in the fabric lengthwise direction is referred to as the warp. It is supplied to the weaving machine on a loom beam. Warp yarns are often called ends."

Binding – Printing Industry "The act of fastening, securing, uniting"
Texturizing-
Construction Industry "Construction applications -wall covering fabrics, curtains, veils, wall hangings, vertical blinds, roofing"

Industrial Industry "Industrial applications -thermal insulation, gas filtration, anti corrosion reinforcement"

Transportation Industry "Transportation application - Clutch disc, brake linings"
Casting- Metal Industry, Plastic Industry

Printing – Publication industry

Bonding- Automotive industry (car paint)

Welding - Automotive industry

Gliding - Construction for Doors & Windows "To move smoothly and continuously along, as if without effort or resistance"

Coating – Automobile Industry, Industrial Industry
PVC coated yarns for sun and insect screening
PTFE coated fabrics for high-end printed wiring boards (low dielectric constant/low losses), architectural and roofing membranes
Specific properties of PTFE fabrics – such as non-stick and smooth surface, resistance to chemicals, compliance with food regulation, temperature resistance and high tensile strength – benefit a wide range of applications, including food processing, conveyor belts, release sheets, thermal insulation, sealing and more

Fastening- Construction Industry,Engineering Industry, Fashion Industry

Forming - Metal Industry, Construction Industry (concrete forming)

Knotting- Fashion Industry

Polishing - Metal industry, Stone industry

Etching - Printing Industry "The act or process of making designs or pictures on a metal plate, glass, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_etching"

This is a video of glass bottle etching and marketing strategy for it http://vimeo.com/18966608

Melting -Glass industry, Metal industry

Equipment needed:

Experiment 1:

Milk + Food coloring + liquid detergent

Experiment 2:

Baking soda + coloring + vinegar

As for the our own workshop we helped Ms. Philippa to document her process of experiment by trying these process on different kind of material as exploration.

Below are some of the images of type of process + material:

cutting + weaving on jersey

coating on aluminium

binding on leather

molding with aluminum foil

texturizing on leather

Group project experiment on jersey and aluminum material
