Fictional Island Final Part

After some ideal of making / creating process from last material workshop, it’s time to put in the idea to realization.
But somehow our team has misunderstanding with the brief given, where we didn’t back up our “ideal island” with research to supporting the facts. Then we given one hour for make some findings.

Then with brain storm within our group on the execution, and despite all the constant changing of plans and indecisiveness + non-stop idea coming in from teammates how it should be presented in best way either dialog stage, purely acting from four of us…

And we ended it last 20minute discussion before times up, we decided to turn into one narrative speaker which hold by Julia (Fashion), two as actress Kim & Hend (P+S) and one engage with the audience Laura (Fashion).

The challenge:
  • It’s was making a pitch, letting people know our island in very best manner, where have the audience be engage by putting their own personal belongings
  •  Having 2 actress with no dialog and music background (which commented quite cliché) and bird squeaking sound to have more real as new born animal as possible.
  • By making some fur costume, bird mask, bird nest and other little props for the set.

    The verdict:
  •     It’s is a success outcome with given the short time and last minute changes to go with this direction.
  •     Our judges (Colin and Nancy) like the scene engagement, seriousness and execution done with well deliver message of our Fictional Island.
  •        We won as 3rd by competing with 6 teams.

Material Workshop

We had material workshop where we explore the possibilities of material itself with different working process. With a list of process to be follow as below:

Drilling                       Cutting                    Molding

Weaving                     Binding                   Texturizing

Casting                       Printing                  Bonding

Welding                      Gliding                    Coating

Fastening                    Forming                  Knotting

Polishing                     Etching                   Melting

To have better understanding with the process, I pair them up with possible industry scale, images and video to have better idea what these process means, as some of them have similar process but yet very different and most of all the final product itself normally involve 2 or more process to created.

E.g. : Molding need melting the product itself then pour into a molding

Drilling – Construction industry

Cutting – Stone & Marble Industry

Molding – Injection molding / Plastic Industry

Weaving- Fabric Industry "Provides the means to interlace warp and filling yarns according a weave pattern to form a fabric structure. The yarns system in the fabric lengthwise direction is referred to as the warp. It is supplied to the weaving machine on a loom beam. Warp yarns are often called ends."

Binding – Printing Industry "The act of fastening, securing, uniting"
Texturizing-
Construction Industry "Construction applications -wall covering fabrics, curtains, veils, wall hangings, vertical blinds, roofing"

Industrial Industry "Industrial applications -thermal insulation, gas filtration, anti corrosion reinforcement"

Transportation Industry "Transportation application - Clutch disc, brake linings"
Casting- Metal Industry, Plastic Industry

Printing – Publication industry

Bonding- Automotive industry (car paint)

Welding - Automotive industry

Gliding - Construction for Doors & Windows "To move smoothly and continuously along, as if without effort or resistance"

Coating – Automobile Industry, Industrial Industry
PVC coated yarns for sun and insect screening
PTFE coated fabrics for high-end printed wiring boards (low dielectric constant/low losses), architectural and roofing membranes
Specific properties of PTFE fabrics – such as non-stick and smooth surface, resistance to chemicals, compliance with food regulation, temperature resistance and high tensile strength – benefit a wide range of applications, including food processing, conveyor belts, release sheets, thermal insulation, sealing and more

Fastening- Construction Industry,Engineering Industry, Fashion Industry

Forming - Metal Industry, Construction Industry (concrete forming)

Knotting- Fashion Industry

Polishing - Metal industry, Stone industry

Etching - Printing Industry "The act or process of making designs or pictures on a metal plate, glass, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_etching"

This is a video of glass bottle etching and marketing strategy for it http://vimeo.com/18966608

Melting -Glass industry, Metal industry

Fictional Island - Part II

So the following week, we discuss each of our proposal of the island, each of us have a concept we like form each other proposal, so trough out the discussion we have this final island we all like to live in!

Fictional Island - No Constraints, No Money, No Time

To enter the island a ritual is required which must be held in the woods in order to remain close to nature. The ritual involves a song and dance whilst ‘eating money’ and ‘breaking time’. The concept of eating money is a demonstration that the individual has come to terms with the fact that money is only a materialistic factor in our world and that there is more to life than money. This supports the values of the Island, as there is no currency.

The transition of transcending to the island will only happen if the individual’s beliefs are genuine and once this is guaranteed and the ritual process has been successful the individual will be asked to take only 3 items with them to the island.

The way the humans physically enter the island is by ‘eating money’ and then once they need the toilet they will sit on a toilet seat and suddenly they will be transported to this world.

As there is no currency, in order to “buy” things you must trade with your belongings, therefore people will only have the most important items on them. This supports the idea that we live in a cluttered society with lots of things that we don’t actually use.

It also maintains a steady level of social status, where all habitants have similar power and wealth, and this would then eliminate greed. There will be an interesting twist for all as they will quickly discover that although they have been asked to bring their most important three items, they need to use them to exchange other important items to survive. This means that they will never have ‘favorite’ items as they will always circulate around the population.

All members of the island will be given a portion of the atmosphere, which they can use to build a ‘home’, from materials found on the island (these will at later stages be revealed).

On this island the main purpose of living is based on the journey of finding your own creature. This means that as humans enter the island they begin a search for the animal within them. And as ‘time’ (even though by this I don’t mean actual time) passes by they begin to morph into a creature.

They will communicate like humans do, but as this process develops further they start to communicate in different ways depending on which ‘creature’ they have morphed into. This morphing process will reveal interesting stages, which will cover the human side as well as the creature characteristics and features.
Energy is important in every world. We have to run on some form of ‘energy’, and in this world energy comes from waterfalls that are actually found everywhere. The elements of these waterfalls will mainly be composed of human liquid. The more humans morph into creatures the more they ‘shed’ a liquid which is human liquid that is then conserved by the creatures and taken to mountain tops where eventually they gather and become waterfalls. When in need of energy the creatures will go to these special waterfalls to collect the potion which will collected in special containers.

This is a comical twist on the current human race as they have used nature and ruined it in order to create energy for the world’s human race. However on this island it’s the other way round, nature is using human liquid to create energy.
The success is rated by determining how comfortable they have become in their own skin, in their new personalities and characteristics.

It is also about how successful they have been at leaving greed, hate, money- handling and time constraints back in the real world. This would mean they have fully grasped the concept of no financial stress and understanding how to deal with the politics of this island.

Another important aspect which also be a determining factor of success is; being environmentally aware and understanding the concept of ‘human waterfalls’ and why they exist.

They have to use them reasonably and not wasting energy. Only through this will they have access back to the real world.

Once this happens and they are transcended back, realizing that time had stopped in the real world and they can pick up their lives where they had left them, however this time taking into consideration the experience and life lessons they had undergone whilst being part of the island.

Below is summary of my group member islands proposal :

Julia's - Is a dream world and a form of meditation to be away from reality (as it's a hectic lifestyle) where you bring 3 items you love most into this island.

Hend's - A very interesting research and reality could be possible where future inhabitants live underground because of rising water level and global warming.

Laura's - A very mythical world which comes with stages of challenge and a new form of communication begin as you goes into this island and become a creature.

Fictional Island - Part I

Fictional Island
Being given a group assignment to create our own Fictional Island where we decide to have our own draft of "fictional island" then we combine with others, so I decided to create base on current global situation with history and current political issue, economy and social behavior.

Manifesto
Be self content, conscious, wise and appreciate life!

Issue 1# Human Race

Human race has failed by itself and success by itself by wanting more. Economy fails by wanting more, science success by wanting more.
Root of problem, human greed, abusive of facility, vanity

Soloution#

Therefore, I would like my island has all the goodness of socialism, communism and capitalism mixture. A third form of government where people who like the island culture and system will be invited to live here and free from any religion.

Issue 2# - Waste & Pollution
Oil has been cause pollution, war and its unsustainable energy.

Iraq war has been a good example http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4354269.stm
Our human race has produce so much waste and is a globally facing the same problem.

Soloution 2#

Ideally geographical there will have high mountains and built a dam to generate hydroelectric.People in the island would spend more research on natural waste to product daily product as their aim for modern lifestyle.

Issue 3# Human Nature

Now a day’s people have so much things they want but actually don’t really need, competing each other in material, and especially they become slave for money and end up working longer hours for it and missed a lot of important things in life which happen a glimpse of time. And most of all these monopolize company share holders who enjoy the fruits of our hard work.

People forget how to share; the real basic reason to be human is learn to be human.

Solution 3#

People who has depth of wisdom, to have people aware of their jealousy, greed and all sort of negative and how to minimize and turn it to positive.
Only have what they need or require – on food, clothing, and material obsession.

Issue 4# Marriage

Research showed that divorce is alarming and data shown as below:

http://www.divorce.com/article/divorce-rate

Since 1970 marriages have declined 30%.

Since 1970 divorces have increased 40%.
Women are the first to file for divorce 65% of the time.
Over 40% of first marriages end within 13 years.
Over 20% of first marriages end within 5 years.
Over 75% of divorced people get remarried.
Second marriages fail 65% of the time.
Premarital cohabitation increased 70% in the 1990’s.
Over 50% of premarital cohabitating couples split up within 5 years.
Over 50% of marriages are preceded by premarital cohabitation

Souloution 4#

Couple can be married if they sure they have main four components which is loyalty + honored + respect + love, maybe lie detector/ brain scan.

How this islands works?

Socially

People will given for 10 acres of land and produce what they like to be – farm, factory, restaurant, salon, retail etc.

For the children when they are reach age 21, 5 acres will be given, due to possible of increase population by then and inheritance from generation.

Why?
To encourage do what they really enjoy and self run entrepreneur.

Currency
There won’t be currency as but they will have token given with what they harvest / produce / service from the land, with exchange for others goods or service token will be give.
Eg. 1 hours of your service = 1 token, 1kg of meat = 1 token.
There won’t be any bank, as there won’t be lending any money to anyone.

Why?
With abundance of history we could trace from WW1, WW2, the great depression and current economy such as "open market" has cause a lot of financial bubbles, inflation, the gap of rich and poor and abuse of financial system.

Individual
No fat people allowed, at least within standard BMI
Education system is free till age 21, further study will need to contribute service to the institution.

Why?
It's a tax free island so we are encourage healthy citizen and fewer burdens for government.

Also apply to the island manifesto – eat what you need and not greedy!
There won’t be health care system. As it’s a tax free island
As for education, it's important people in the island have knowledge they need to excel in life and contribute to society, but to avoid abuse of the system they have to contribute toward to the society by earning token.

Law
People caught of vain will be punished and ultimately be sent away from the island if they repeat their mistake.

Why?
Vanity is not encourage in this island.

Publication

Well, as part of the content of the book is document my journey, exploration, inquiry and collaboration in four main topics which is:
Being Human
Publication workshop
Materials Workshop
Critical Design Workshop

Since the journeys of these topics have not come to end yet, I have made some study on how to make a good cover as a start.
For me, I always goes to titles that get’s my attention despite half of these book are not very well edited or friendly reading (at least to my own standard)!
Then, after surveyed over 20 people from all age 80% says the first thing that attract them to pick up a book is title, other 10% is outstanding typeface and other 10% is cover page cover/graphic.
Secondly I researched on best cover design which has inspired me what should I design with my cover. http://nytimesbooks.blogspot.com/  and also a blog about “why a good cover makes a good book better “by Wayne Gooderham  http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/booksblog/2009/nov/23/good-cover-good-book-nabokov
As for this blog http://nytimesbooks.blogspot.com/ despite the book covers were slightly back dated (from 2009-2005), I found it interesting when I self-access with the vote. Strange but true, 2 out of 3 vote I cast, is the highest vote for the favorite book cover design.

The Interrogative Mood: A Novel?, design by Alison Forner:

The second poll which I voted for
The End of Food, design by Mark Robinson

Analysis:
I believe curiosity is one of the key elements, as this two book cover has trigger my curiosity, the first cover which has no title at all and with a question mark has make a lot of impact of me wanting to know more. As for the second cover, which sort of the opposite of the first cover content where they had all the information you need to know what that book all about by nicely done with a picture and, a very good narrative design.
On top of that, font, graphic, composition is other element has to consider.

How far do you agree that British people prefer not to stand out from the crowd?

Come from a mix cultural country for myself, I always like to know what other country works as a community. I feel sometimes is a contagious or mirror energy that reflects everyone to act what’s majority has.

At first, my cousin-in-law told me that general British people prefer to be mediocre instead of out-shines from the crowd, as you might get envious from others.
Then after my move to new place, where I had a brief chat with my landlord he agree with what I told from my cousin-in-law, therefore I decided to observe into this matter.
In return, I interview 4 British people, age in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s.
With my own opinion, indeed with time ideology and society has change, for the 2 younger interviewers they are very neutral with the statement, where they think is more on individual rather as a whole. And the older interviewer is very much agreeing with the statement given.

And with my reasoning behind my findings as below:

History –In general, back from 150years ago, 90% of the world population were living in the suburb or country side and work as farming and crops and 10% of the world population live in the city. As for now 50% of the population lives in city and 50% lives in suburb or country side, which means due to increase of population in small city, is obvious that people need to make “noise” in order to get attention.

Socially –With media trend, having competition and talent show since a few years back, the community has changed their attitude towards being conservative.

Economically – Economy has ever been more and more competitive and inflation, people have become more competitive to adjust the ever changing market. On top of that, globalization is new trend where people travel and learn from each other.

Climate / Geographically – The north, such as Scandinavians were more clams and inner interact with small group. Where else when you down south, the warmer country e.g. Spain, Italy in general they are louder. Perhaps British were just fits in between as with the climate is.

With still, people should just be proud what they are where this is an identity for the British regardless what.
